Roombas as Pets
I’m a bit offended that iRobot doesn’t make an effort to get my Roomba’s gender correct.
People clearly treat their Roomba robots as pets. From a bluesky social network thread, here’s a list of names of Roombas. There’s some puns, mostly on the idea of vacuuming and brand names. Lots of references to Roombas doing dumb stuff, getting themselves stuck and so forth. Clearly some people are very fond of their Roombas.
I do like the idea of not giving a robot a human name, lest they become sentient. This must be why Russ Manning named robots “H8”, “Z0F”, and similar in the old Magnus, Robot Fighter comic books.
