The Eschatian Hypothesis isn’t as sexy as the Silurian Hypothesis. Kipping notes that the first of many classes of astronomical object (exoplanets and supernovae among others) discovered is atypically large or luminous or unusual in some other visible fashion. The hypothesis is that the first extra-terrestrial civilization humans discover will be an atypical civilization, probably in some phase that gives off a lot of energy.
This has practical consequences for SETI:
… the Eschatian Hypothesis suggests that wide-field, high-cadence surveys optimized for generic transients may offer our best chance of detecting such loud, short-lived civilizations."
That is, look for transient energy bursts that don’t match known, explainable phenomenon.
For some sci fi stories, the Eschatian Hypothesis has no real consequences: “Captain, Captain! We’ve spotted an alien civilization!” Insert tech details here.
For others, like Carl Sagan’s Contact, finding a loud, atypical civilization via finding an anomalous transient burst of energy would kill the story. They’re supposed to be the wise Old Ones, not busy killing themselves with lasers or planetary scale status displays.
